Periodontal Disease

Puffy and tender gums, loose teeth, chronic bad breath, and painful chewing — these are among the common signs of periodontal or gum disease. If left untreated, this disease not only takes the joy out of eating and speaking, but may also lead to tooth loss.

Periodontal disease develops when bacteria cling to and flourish on the surface of teeth. As it progresses, bacteria begin to destroy surrounding areas of the teeth, gums, and the jawbone; prompting tooth loss.

Causes

In addition to poor oral care, experts believe that a person’s risk of developing periodontal disease are influenced by genetic and environmental factors, including:

  • Heredity – People who are predisposed to the condition and have a history of periodontal disease in the family are six times more likely to also develop the disease. Early intervention by keeping the mouth clean and healthy can prevent the disease.
  • Pregnancy and menopause – Hormonal changes during pregnancy and menopause can also increase the risk of developing periodontal disease. Regular brushing and flossing can reduce the risk.
  • Medical conditions – Diabetes, pulmonary, and cardiovascular diseases are strongly linked to periodontal disease. Severe periodontal disease can increase blood sugar. This puts people with diabetes at higher risk for diabetic complications.
Tobacco use – Cigarette smokers are also on the list of people who have a higher chance of developing this disease. Pollutants from tobacco (including chewing tobacco) are believed to trigger gum inflammation.
  • Medication – Drugs (including oral contraceptives, heart medicine, antidepressants, and steroids) can negatively affect the overall condition of teeth and gums, making them more susceptible to gum disease. Steroid use promotes gingival overgrowth, which promotes swelling. This also allows bacteria to colonize in the gum tissue.

Preventive Measures

Following sound oral hygiene practices and regular consultation with a dentist remain the best ways to prevent periodontal disease development. Lessen the risks of the disease with:

  • Regular flossing and brushing – Proper and regular brushing is essential to flush away bacteria and prevent plaque buildup. Couple this with flossing to dislodge food debris in crevices.
  • Healthy eating – Eat fruits and vegetables daily to boost the immune system and reduce the possibility of infection. Eat foods that are rich in Calcium and Vitamin D to strengthen your teeth.
  • Regular dentist visits – Commit to seeing your dentist twice a year to check your oral health. Dentists can detect early warning signs of gum disease, halt the progress of periodontal disease, and provide the treatment you need. Have your teeth cleaned and examined regularly.
